Assignment

For this project, you will create an annotated bibliography using Noodletools


First, choose one of the following five topics:

  1. one of the Germanic tribes
  2. Byzantium
  3. one of the four social classes - monk, serf, lord or merchant
  4. one of the Crusades
  5. the Vikings
  6. the Moors in Spain

Then, using the catalog, a search engine and our databases, find at least six sources (two print, two web and two database).  Look at these sources with a critical eye: is this a credible source?  will it be useful for your research?  how can you use the source in your research?

Go to Noodletools, create a list for this project, and then start entering the bibliographic information about each source (usually that's title, author and publishing information).  See a librarian if you are not sure you have the correct information for each source!  Your annotation should include ideas/citations from the sources, as well as an evaluation of how the source will help, what types of information it provides, and why this source rather than another one.

 

Evaluating Sources

One of the things you will need to do as you do research is evaluate the resources you find.  The first question you should ask about any resource is "what does this do for my research?" In other words, is this information useful?  If it isn't - move on.  Don't waste time looking at sources that aren't going to help you.

Once you know it's useful, look at the resource and answer the following (not every question is important for every source - for some, it won't matter when it was published, for others it won't matter if there's a bias).

Currency

  • When was the material published?
  • Is there a date listed on which the material was last updated?
  • For websites: are the links active?

Reliability

  • Are sources provided so that the information can be verified?
  • Does the information agree with, enhance or contradict other information you've found?

Authority

  • Are the qualifications of the author/creator responsible for the contents of the site indicated? 
  • Do they have subject expertise?

On the web:

  • Is it clear what organization, company, or person is responsible for the contents?
  • Is there a way to contact who ever is responsible for the site?

Purpose/Point of View

  • Who sponsored the information?
  • Is there an evident point-of-view/bias?
  • Why was the book written?
  • For websites: is the site free of advertising?
